On June 2, 2021, our President and Founder, Ms. Ify Nwabukwu, was honored alongside two other change-makers for her COVID-19 resilience. She received the “Laurel Award for Dedication to Community Service”.
Ms. Ify’s work and journey of impact in cancer prevention and care began 16 years ago. Her demonstrable passion and dedication to identifying and meeting community needs for cancer prevention and screening make her highly revered by her colleagues. Ms. Ify’s public health tools have been distributed in 11 African languages to more than 40,000 African immigrants and African Americans, both nationally and internationally. Under her leadership, her team has designed and implemented more than 30 breast cancer programs on capacity building, community education, screening services, and diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer among African immigrant communities.
When COVID-19 hit the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, Ms. Ify worked with her team to re-strategize and raise community funds to provide personal protective equipment to more than 3,000 Black breast cancer survivors and their families and to connect hundreds of cancer survivors with COVID-19 testing and vaccination.
We want to thank Prevent Cancer Foundation for recognizing Ms. Ify’s work through AWCAA. This award is an encouragement to keep serving the African immigrant community in the best ways that we can.
