Patient Navigation Services

Patient Navigation Services:

Recognizing that several factors including cultural beliefs, education level, and fear contribute to how one decides to obtain care, AWCAA has remained committed to delivering culturally appropriate support services to the women and families we serve. We provide patient navigation services to underserved, under privileged, and under insured African immigrant women, supporting them as they move through  the continuum of care from awareness and prevention to treatment and survivorship.

Our patient navigation services help bridge the gap for African immigrant woman facing breast cancer. Most barriers we aim to address through our patient navigation program which include:

Translation: language barriers impede proper understanding of medical jargon
Transportation: most of the women we serve use public transportation which most times creates difficulty in keeping scheduled appointments.
Child Care Needs: Women often need assistance finding care for their small children and/or grandchildren in order for them to keep their doctor’s appointments and other routine office visits.

By helping women navigate the large and complex health care system, we help to break barriers of silence in the African communities and change lives one woman at a time.
