Education forms the very fabric of AWCAA’s daily mission, touching lives and empowering individuals on their arduous journey. In a matter of months, the AWCAA Iroko Queen’s Support Group has blossomed into an extraordinary therapeutic haven for breast cancer survivors, their families, and friends. This transformative platform provides a safe space for sharing experiences, fostering resilience, and collectively addressing the multifaceted challenges associated with breast cancer.
We are thrilled to share the highlights of our recent event, the AWCAA Breast Cancer Survivor’s Mother’s Day Brunch, which took place on May 13, 2023, in Silver Spring, Maryland. Organized by the African Women Breast Cancer Awareness Association (AWCAA), this event was a heartfelt celebration of breast cancer survivors and a commemoration of Mother’s Day.
We had our event speaker Cynthia Appiah, who inspired and encouraged everyone to use empowering affirmations. The atmosphere was filled with love, resilience, and support. The brunch was a testament to the strength and determination of these remarkable women who have faced the challenges of breast cancer head-on.
The event featured an inspiring lineup of amazing breast cancer survivors who shared their personal journeys of battling breast and colon cancer. We were honored to have Ms. Esther Peters, AWCAA’s Program Manager, Teresa Offong, an ordained minister, community health worker, and Patient Navigator with AWCAA, as well as Thelma D. Jones, the founder of Thelma D. Jones Breast Cancer Foundation, a longstanding partner of AWCAA. Additionally, Ms. Emma Lokosun also shared her story, which touched the hearts of everyone present. Their stories not only shed light on the difficulties they faced but also showcased their courage, resilience, and determination to overcome.
One of the most touching moments of the event was when we had the privilege to present a donation of one thousand dollars to Ms. Terry Wade, also known as Pixey, a breast cancer survivor. This contribution was made to support Pixey in moving to a new accommodation. We believe that small acts of kindness can make a significant impact on individuals facing challenging circumstances.
During the brunch, all the women were celebrated and showered with flowers and gifts as a token of our appreciation for their strength and perseverance. It was a beautiful sight to witness their smiles and feel the sense of community that surrounded us. The spirit of sisterhood was truly alive as they joined together to cut a cake, symbolizing unity and solidarity in their fight against breast cancer.
We would like to acknowledge that this event was held under our Iroko Queen’s Support Group initiative, which aims to provide comprehensive support and resources to breast cancer survivors. The success of this brunch reaffirms our commitment to empowering and uplifting women in our community who are facing breast cancer.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the attendees, volunteers, and speakers who made this event a remarkable success. Your presence and participation made a significant difference, inspiring hope, and resilience in the hearts of those in attendance.
As we continue our mission to raise awareness and support breast cancer survivors, we invite you to stay connected with AWCAA. Follow our social media channels and website for updates on upcoming events, support group sessions, and informative resources.
Together, we can make a difference and create a world where no woman faces breast cancer alone.
